It will not be a surprise that you come across a person that only know about domain name and say this is my website and have no knowledge of web hosting. Let me explain both of these terms in simple English for novice computer users.

Domain registration means acquiring a name on the Internet, just think of it as you get a new phone number from telephone company or sign up for an email address from email provider. Similarly on a broader scale Domain name is like getting a number from this big company that we call Internet or World Wide Web.

When you purchase a domain name you do not actually buy it, you get it on rent for a specific period but you are considered owner of the name unless you stop paying rent for it. A domain name fee is paid at least for one year which is around $10-20, you can also pay fee for multiple years some people pay for 5 years or 10 years together to avoid the stress of renewing every year at the right time. Because if you do not pay the renewal fee on time you might lose your domain name.

On the other hand web hosting is a service provided by a company we call a web host. Web hosts have computers running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. These computers are called web servers because they are built for heavy-duty work and they are more powerful than normal computer that we use in our homes or offices. These web hosts allows you to use those computers by placing your website files on them. They will charge you monthly or yearly fee to host your website on those computers.

Think you are done? not yet if you buy domain and hosting from two different companies the next step will be linking your domain name with your web hosting account. You can avoid this step if you purchase both domain and hosting from the same company because they will do the linking for you.
